We all have a general understanding that washing our hands is imperative. But, it is easy to disregard this simple step because of its tedious nature. Don’t undermine this very important habit because it is the best way to avoid getting sick and spreading germs. Handwashing is a significant part of our process as a commercial cleaning company and we want to help you understand why it’s important to make sure you are washing your hands properly.

Why Should You Wash Your Hands?

  • Have you ever noticed how often you touch your face? Your gut reaction might be, “oh I bet it’s not that much,” but people frequently and involuntarily touch their nose, eyes, and mouth. Unfortunately, these are the places where germs can enter our body.
  • If you handle or share food, germs from unwashed hands can get into food and drinks which provides easy access to harming your body.
  • Germs are everywhere and they are easily transferred onto everyday items. Often office cleaning gets pushed by the wayside. Even when it’s not, people don’t have enough time in the day to keep every space perpetually cleaned or have a commercial cleaning service come in every second of the day.

Does Washing Your Hands Actually Help?

According to the CDC, handwashing helps communities stay healthy by:

  • Reducing the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by 31%
  • Reducing diarrheal illness in people with weakened immune systems by 58%
  • Reducing respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21%

How Do You Properly Wash Your Hands?

A general guide from the Mayo Clinic:

    • Wet hands with running water
    • Apply soap
    • Lather well
    • Rub hands vigorously for 20 seconds. Rule of Thumb: Sing Happy Birthday twice in a row to yourself.
    • Rinse Well
    • Dry hands with clean or disposable towel.
    • Use that same towel to turn off the faucet.

Don’t simply rinse your hands off. When you properly wash your hands, you are not only helping yourself, but also helping others.
